Exosomes in Atherosclerosis & Cardiovascular Disease

The Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory within NCIRE and the Department of Surgery at UCSF is offering an opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist position. We seek applicants who are passionate and skilled in the study of mammalian metabolism and immunity. Our laboratory explores mechanisms through which metabolic stress alters hematopoiesis and immune cell biology in the process of atherosclerosis progression and regression.

Ongoing studies investigate mechanisms through which diabetes alters microRNA biogenesis to control hematopoiesis and myeloid cell activity in inflammation and atherosclerosis. Newly funded studies will explore the influence that diabetic hyperglycemia exerts on the regulated release of microRNA into extracellular vesicles including exosomes and how intercellular communication via such extracellular RNA impact on accelerating atherosclerosis and impairing its regression in mice. Our projects will offer opportunities to collaborate with laboratories across the UCSF campuses providing a rich source of scientific growth.

  • PhD degree focused on mammalian immunology or metabolism, with a total of 5-7 years of relevant lab/research experience and a record of scientific publication.
  • Demonstrated experience with in vitro/in vivo studies of cellular signaling including via microRNA and Redox biology in mammalian models of inflammation.
  • Skilled with advanced flow cytometry and cell sorting to study mature immune cells and hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells.
  • Skilled with the histological detection of proteins and nucleic acids in mammalian tissues.
  • Experience working with in vivo models of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is desirable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and assist with the training of junior staff as required
  • Strong oral/written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Computer literacy with emphasis on Windows Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and statistical software required for data analysis and its graphical output.
